Chiropractic treatment was not always accepted as a viable and effective form of medicine. The knowledge that the spine has a connection with other systems in the human body dates back as far as the Greek philosopher Hippocrates, who is attributed with saying, “Look well to the spine for the cause of disease.” However, the first instance of modern chiropractic treatment took place in the late 1800’s. A Canadian living in Iowa by the name Daniel David Palmer was practiced in natural forms of healing. One day Palmer discovered that Harvey Lillard, a janitor, suffered from an out of place vertebra. Lillard told Palmer that he moved in such a way that he popped the vertebra out of place. Lillard also lost much of his hearing when this event occurred. Palmer believed there must be some connection with his out of place vertebra and hearing loss. Upon receiving an adjustment to his spine, Lillard reported that his hearing was restored.

Modern Chiropractitioners

Palmer is viewed today as the first modern chiropractor. As often happens with new advancements in medicine, Palmer’s new form of natural treatment was met with resistance. Palmer coined the term chiropractic using the Greek word chiro, or cheiro, meaning hand. During the late 1800’s, osteopathy was a more established form of natural medicine. Osteopathy is the treatment through the massaging of muscles, joints, and bones. Critics viewed Palmer’s methods as an unnecessary extension of osteopathy. Palmers continued to battle resistance in the medical community into the early 1900’s. Years of resistance followed long after Palmer's death. It wasn’t until the 1970’s that serious efforts were made to test chiropractic adjustment as a valid form of medical treatment.

Today, there are over 50,000 licensed chiropractors in the United States, and it is widely accepted throughout the world. Chiropractic treatment continues to grow through recorded success and research. Advantage Walk-in Chiropractic is proud to continue the legacy left behind by Daniel David Palmer.
